Onam festival:

Onam festival is the most famous festival celebrated in Kerala, India. The Kerala harvest festival, also known as the festival of monsoon flowers, is a ten days event that is joyfully celebrated throughout Kerala. It is celebrated during the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which usually begins in late August and ends in mid-September.

This festival is celebrated from Astam to Thiruvanam Nakshatra.

Onam is the most important festival in Kerala. this festival is grandly celebrated for ten days. This year’s Onam festival starts on 30th August 2022 and ends on 08th September 2022. As Onam ends yesterday, we also celebrated very well with our team. Many competitions were held and special prizes were awarded for it. Our OrderZ team was very happy and enjoyed celebrating this event.

The 10 days of the Onam festival are similar to a carnival. To witness these enthusiastic celebrations, tourists line up in Kerala. Some of the best features of the celebrations have been mentioned below:

  • Pookalam

Poo mean flower and kalam mean artwork. Floral rangoli the “Pookalam” is a very important part of the Onam celebrations. It is a beautiful and colourful arrangement of flowers arranged on the floor.

  • Onam dance

Kummatti kali, pulikali or kaduvakali, kathakali, thumbi thullal, kaikotti kali these are Onam festival dances. 

  • Onam sadhya

Sadhya means feast in Malayalam. Sadhya is a traditional dish served during Onam, the official state festival of Kerala.

  • Vellamkali Boat Race

Vallamkali is a classic boat race held during the Onam festival and a traditional boat race in Kerala. it is a form of canoe racing and uses paddled war canoes.

  • Elephant procession

The elephant procession is considered one of the most popular attractions of the Onam festival. Organized every year in Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, this procession exudes unparalleled royal honour and pride.

Ten days of Onam:

Atham – August 30, 2022

The first day marks the start of the Onam festival. it has a deep religious significance when king Mahabali begins his journey toward earth. Yellow flowers are used to decorate the place as a way to identify Atham. Pookalam is the name of the entire decoration.

Chithira – August 31, 2022

The second day of the Onam festival has arrived. Chithira is the name of this day. On this day, they cover Pookalam with yet another layer of yellow flowers. On this day, they also clean homes to make them attractive to king Mahabali. 

Chodhi – September 1, 2022

The third day of the Onam festival is called Chodhi. On this day, people also decorate Pookalam with yellow flowers and start to indulge in shopping.

Vishakam – September 2, 2022

Vishakam is the name of the fourth day of celebration. From this day onwards, different forms of competitions begin to organise in Kerala.

Anizham – September 3, 2022

Anizham is the name of the festival’s fifth day, Onam. on this day, the Vallamkali boat race starts in several Kerala regions. 

Thriketa – September 4, 2022

Thriketa is the name of the festival’s sixth day, Onam. The main festival celebration starts on this day onward. From this day until the end of the Onam festival, schools are also closed.

Moolam – September 5, 2022

Moolam is the name of Onam’s seventh day. Several dance performances are scheduled for this day. By this time, the state as a whole is attractively decorated.

Pooradam – September 6, 2022

Pooradam is the name of the festival’s eighth day. King Mahabali and Vamana’s idols are cleaned on this day and then positioned in the middle of the exquisite “Pookalam” artwork. The decoration still looks large and plentiful.

Uthradam – September 7, 2022

Uthradam is the name of the ninth day of the Onam celebration. The significance of this auspicious day is enormous in Kerala. People engage in buying market-fresh fruits and vegetables on this day. Women also cook traditional meals. There is a legend that the great king Mahabali arrives in Kerala on this day. The whole surroundings at this time are full of delight and happiness to give a warm welcome to the king.

Thiruvonam – September 8, 2022

The ten-day-long Onam festival ends on this day. Thiruvonam is the name of the tenth day. All of the preparations are final festivities on this day. People wake up early and take a bath, distributed gifts, and attend special prayers in temples. All the homes prepare the delicious Thiruvonam Sadhya or Onam special meal. In addition, various types of competitions are organized in different areas across the state.
